Cerebral Palsy Statistics

By the Numbers

  • Currently, 800,000 Americans live with some form of Cerebral Palsy. That’s more than Multiple Sclerosis, Cystic Fibrosis, and Muscular Dystrophy COMBINED
  • Every Year, roughly 9500 new cases of infants and children are identified
  • 75% of individuals with Cerebral Palsy have another developmental Disability, including mental retardation, autism, epilepsy, and visual impairments
  • There is currently NO CURE
  • While medical  care has improved, which would suggest lower rates of CP, the survival of preemies and low birth weight infants is increasing, thus keeping the overall incidence of CP relatively steady. Rate are 3 in 1000 live births in this courntry (similar to autism)

Research Funding Amounts

Unfortunately, a tremendous disparity in funding exists for Cerebral Palsy:

Disease/ ConditionFunding Per Occurrence
Autism$ 101.00
Muscular Dystrophy$ 160.00
Multiple Sclerosis$ 275.00
West Nile Virus$2,866.00
Cystic Fibrosis$2,967.00
Cerebral Palsy$ 28.75

With little Federal Support, private agencies are forces to fund not only a cure, but identification and assistive technologies. The result, little focus in finding TRUE CURES. Smiles from Nicholas on CP will change that.
